There is a royal family in Denmark, but they seem low-key compared to that in my birth country - England! Still, there are princesses and castles and palaces, and yesterday we visited the Royal Theatre, Det Kongelige Teater. This is the resident theatre of the Royal Danish Ballet, connected internally to the beautiful backstage and studio areas that I described earlier. Right now the theatre is closed for the summer - there are no performances. We had a tour and got to cross over into the old part, through a maze of corridors and flights of stairs until suddenly we were in the old opulent theatre, and on the stage. It was quiet and dark. We whispered and tip-toed. Where we startling the ghosts from beautiful performances from times past? This is Lydia sitting in the "royal box" where kings and queens of Denmark past and present sit when they come to the theatre! Every theatre seems to have a very special atmosphere to it when it is empty - time suspended, history and anticipation all together. I hope to return to the theatre when it fills with applause!
