Five Little Books in Korea

posted Wednesday, 8 April 2009

I have quite a few projects coming out and being published all at once. It seems like I have been very busy (well, I have!) but actually on my end I finished them over quite a few months. It is the project I finished most recently in December that is ready the soonest. Here are the covers of the five books about a little girl and her dog published in Korea, in English. I did the pictures and the words were written by Lisa Thiesing, also an American living in upstate NY. Recently we "met" via email - I found her website  and contacted her which has been fun. Neither of us have any idea how our Korean editors found us - we both were contacted out of the blue. Luckily she likes the illustrations I did for her stories. Isn't that an illustrator's fear that the author won't be happy?! Now we are hoping that we might even work on something together again.

Here is the publisher's website: I can't understand a word - everything is in Korean - but it looks like these books are part of a whole English language program.

What fun! I'm a Waggles fan. But you'd never know the books were for a Korean market, with the words in English, and the little girl looking European. Was that the decision of the publishers?

When I was first asked to makes sketches, my editor emailed that she wanted "cute" characters. To me, those were vague instructions but I thought it had to do with eye/head/body proportion. I made a few sketches and they picked what they thought was the cutest. Then they specifically asked for light brown hair. This process was very interesting to me! Thanks for asking!

hi monica, just to say i love the variety in your blog and your brilliant illustrations! The photographs of the ballerinas are magnificent. it's a pity they are only snipets of the person (though I can understand why) as i would love to paint a ballerina. all the best r.

Thanks for stopping by all the way from Scotland! I cropped the recent ballet pictures to focus in on the beautiful costumes. Maybe I can get some bigger photos to you - I would love to see how you paint dancers! Your still lives that you show on your blog are wonderful!
