Ballet class at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen

posted Friday, 7 July 2006

I went to watch ballet class today. Lydia is in the "Bartholin International Ballet Seminar" - for more about the program and about the great Danish choreographer August Bournonville in general go to: http://www.bournonville.com

It was lots of fun! First of all the theater is beautiful - You go in the stage door, into what looks like an old building from the outside, but then you step into an incrediable space that has been created with different levels around an atrium, filled with paintings and sculptures, and light pouring in from the top. And this is not for the public, this is for the dancers!

The first teacher, associated with the Royal Danish Ballet, was wonderful, (with what a wonderful pianist). The students are from many different countries, schools and styles of dance. This makes for exciting cross-fertilization, sharing and comparing! A principal dancer with RDB, the lovely Silja Schandorf, was taking class along with the students - I could see Lydia studing her closely, as she should!

For the three weeks they will have many wonderful teachers from different places, including Paris, Russia, England. A highlight will be workshops in the Bournonville technique and repertoire. She is having lots of fun - working hard and making new friends!
