In our household we are watching Upstairs, Downstairs, the marvelous British TV series made in the 70’s. We have been borrowing videos and DVDs from the library, trying to watch it in chronological order. I laugh, I cry, I am completely involved with all the characters living in the Bellamy’s London home in Eaton Place, from aristocratic and elegant Lady Marjorie all the way down to Ruby the kitchen maid. I saw some episodes of the series years ago - I remember the characters but not the plots. I am back with characters that I am immensely attached to, but experiencing all the ups and downs and events as if for the first time. Who could ever forget Hudson, the butler, Mrs. Bridges, the cook, Rose, Sarah, Daisy and Edward, Richard Bellamy, the wonderful father, James and Elizabeth...and many more. It is such a wonderful series, wonderfully written, wonderfully acted, of the domestic dramas of the servants downstairs and the upper-class family upstairs, separate entities and one big family both. With close to 70 episodes in total, fortunately we are not running out any time soon.
We usually have a trip planned to London in the summer, to visit my sister and friends, but with Lydia leaving for PNB in Seattle in a week, and me working on my book, I haven't made definite plans yet. Upstairs, Downstairs is a fun substitute!
